DBT-IPU (12 sessions)

DBT-IPU is a program based in Mental Health inpatient units for consumers in existing DBT programs as an outpatient. The purpose of DBT-IPU is to gain further commitment to attend outpatient programs and enhance skills necessary to avoid future admissions. DBT-IPU has 12  x 60 minute sessions over a 2-3 week period.

DBT-IPU: ORIENTATION: This group is held weekly and is designed to help clients maintain interest in the outpatients program. It’s an opportunity enhance clients motivation, ask questions about the DBT outpatient’s program and to connect with other members of the group.

DBT-IPU: INDIVIDUAL COACHING: Each client is allocated a DBT coach who provides twice weekly support and development in the implementation of DBT skills. Individual coaching lasts 30 minutes and can also include: Re-commitment Strategies, Chain Analysis, Role Plays, Treatment Planning and Goal setting and Evaluation.

DBT-IPU: SKILLS GROUPS: DBT Skills groups are organized around the four DBT modules: Mindfulness (increasing awareness) Interpersonal Effectiveness (increasing effectiveness in relationships), Emotion Regulation (increasing ability to regulate emotions), and Distress Tolerance (increasing ability to effectively manage crisis).

DBT Skills are also integrated throughout the whole group program.

  • Session 1 (Mindfulness): Mindfulness exercise, Group Rules, Structure of Group, Phone Coaching, General Handout 1 (Smith), Mindfulness, Wise Mind; Diary Cards
  • Session 2 (Mindfulness): Mindfulness exercise, Observe, Describe, Participate
  • Session 3 (Mindfulness): Mindfulness exercise, (Review Mindfulness); Non-judgemental, One-mindful, Effective
  • Session 4 (Distress Tolerance): Mindfulness exercise, Distress Tolerance; Accepts, Self-Soothe
  • Session 5 (Distress Tolerance): Mindfulness exercise, Improve, & Pros/Cons
  • Session 6 (Distress Tolerance): Mindfulness exercise, (Review Distress Tolerance); Radical Acceptance; Willingness
  • Session 7 (Emotion Regulation): Mindfulness exercise, Emotion Regulation- 3 Goals; Myths about Emotions; Model for Describing Emotions
  • Session 8 (Emotion Regulation): Mindfulness exercise; What good are emotions; PLEASE; Steps for increasing positive emotions; Exploring Emotions -HOMEWORK; Big List of Pleasurable Activities
  • Session 9 (Emotion Regulation): Mindfulness exercise, (Review Emotion Regulation) Letting go of emotional suffering; Opposite action.
  • Session 10 (Interpersonal Effectiveness): Mindfulness exercise, (Review all modules, bring them together including interpersonal effectiveness); Interpersonal Effectiveness – DEAR MAN
  • Session 11 (Interpersonal Effectiveness): Mindfulness exercise, GIVE FAST
  • Session 12 (END): Mindfulness exercises, planning post DBT programs
